San Antonio hospitals working together and communicating on mental illness. A lot of people uninsured and showing up at ER for treatment. They don't know how to access mental health services or don't recognize have a problem yet, Evans said. Treatment works, he said.
"Treatment works, if you can get the person into treatment," Evans said. Intensive out-patient treatment needed, too.
Wasted lives, wasted tax dollars, Evans points out, when a community doesn't come together to solve mental health issues.
"Like in any relationship, the more you give, the more you get," Evans said. Need everyone committed to the issue -- law enforcement, medical field, community, more.
Evans said his county willing to help fund restoration center, rather than adding more beds to the jail.
People drink alcohol and take drugs to prevent themselves from getting sick, Evans said. So the notion of picking up yourself from the bootstraps doesn't always work because they just can't do it. They need help.
